1. Maggie Valley churches serve hot, nutritious meals to 120 to 150 people per week. Approximately two dozen individuals must have meals delivered to their homes. The valley's churches are dependent on donations and supplies in order to prepare, serve, and deliver meals to community members.
2. The churches' Food Pantries operate throughout the week serving needy families.
3. Numerous members of Maggie Valley Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Unitarian, and Anglican churches volunteer at The Open Door, a meal program for homeless in the nearby town of Waynesville, NC. As our gardens grow, we will share produce with The Open Door and Haywood Christian Ministries' food programs.
4. We offer group tours of the gardens. This program is growing rapidly, along with requests to give talks at various clubs and organizations. We currently average one to two presentations per week.
5. We have yard sales and bake sales to raise money for the gardens. We plan to join Maggie Valley's OctoberFest this year with pumpkins, cakes, pies, pumpkin bread, and cider for sale. In a few years we will have jams, jellies, apples, and honey?? for sale.
6. Funds raised are for infrastructure, supplies, and HOPEFULLY, by next year, a paid position for a knowledgeable gardening intern. We are connecting with other giving garden groups along with colleges with agriculture programs to locate prospects.
7. It is our desire to add a horticultural teaching component for community members and our local school. With the addition of a knowledgeable and experienced gardener, we want to extend our initiatives beyond feeding programs.
Afterall, we are Maggie Valley Community Gardens
